When I started reading this classic I thought of the main character, Allan Quartermain as a kind of Indiana Jones. He´s a professional hunter, he collects unique treasures, he lives in Africa and he experience all kinds of different hazardous adventures (referring to some of them in this book).

All begins with his visit to a friend in England, where he is introduced to Lord Ragnall and his future wife. During an elegant dinner with them all the party receive an unexpected visit from two Arab-looking foreigners who introduce themselves as magicians. They foretell to Allan that he will come to their hidden country somewhere in Africa and that they need him to kill their enemy´s god, a terrific elephant called Jana. To the future lady Ragnall they consider their god´s oracle, a holy child. When they are gone, everyone tries to forget what they saw, but something unexpected almost happens to the Ragnalls fiance. Something that will change their lives and bring them all to Africa...

Well, the book is interesting though I hated the hunting and killing parts and found Allan Quartermain a bit selfish sometimes. He doesn´t believe too much any superstition and always tries to find a reasonable answer to the strange things he witnesses. Anyway, there are some captivating moments and the book is easily read. A classic that inspired the adventures of Indiana worth it :)
